Standard LCD TVs use a simple constant backlight to illuminate the image on trhe screen. But this type of lamp is too bright to display decent black images, so blacks can look grey and washed out.

LED backlight is a new technology that converts elctrical energy directly into light, producing a dramatic improvement in colour and contrast. Samsung LED replaces ordinary flourecent backlights with multiple LEDs, arranged around the outer edge of the screen, that can brighten, dim or turn off all together depending on the picture.
